Keeping cool in hot weather

With warmer weather becoming more common, there are a few simple things we can all do to stay cool, comfortable and well during periods of hot weather.
Hot weather can affect anyone, but it can be particularly challenging for older people, young children, pregnant women and people with long-term health conditions. Taking a few simple steps can make a big difference.
Keep your home cool
Keeping your home as cool as possible can help you stay comfortable during the hottest part of the day. Closing curtains or blinds in sunny rooms, opening windows when it's cooler outside and avoiding using the oven during the hottest hours can all help keep indoor temperatures down.
Look after yourself
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, stay in the shade where possible and try to avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
Look out for others
Hot weather can affect some people more than others. If you have an older neighbour, friend or family member, or someone with a health condition, checking in on them during particularly hot weather can make a real difference.
